The 1st annual PLAYING FOR CHANGE DAY – on September 17, 2011 – is a global day of action where musicians of all varieties perform on stages, cafĂ©s, city squares, and street corners worldwide and raise money to bring music into the lives of young people. This year's event carries the theme Power to the People, drawing its inspiration from the spirit of John Lennon's activism, thanks to the gracious support of Playing For Change's mission by Theatre Within and Yoko Ono.

Proceeds raised will support the work of the Playing For Change Foundation and Theatre Within – to help build music schools, strengthen music and arts education, support teachers and performances, purchase instruments, and connect schools to promote cross-cultural learning and conflict resolution. Playing For Change Day is a creative day of action that uses the universal power of music to create positive social change. Your donation or participation contributes to a positive vibration that connects us all.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Nada Brahma' - from Sanskrit - the oldest language in the world, means "Universal Sound'. Nada Brahma was formed from a vision of combining diverse cultural musical instruments and styles into a synergistic sound that would be a blend of 'east meets west' and 'traditional meets modern'. The idea was to create a dynamic, performing musical group consisting of skilled, professional musicians from these various cultures and styles, promoting the concept of unity amidst diversity. It was equally important that each musician selected, understood the importance of complete musical presence and musical integrity - creat- ing music together as one unit and often creating 'in the moment' music. Having a positive attitude and disposition was just as important as the musical abilities because that Energy of positivity would come through the music.

Combining traditional, folk and modern sounds, Nada Brahma pulses with a strong rhythm com- ponent of various world drums and percussion, sings with the melodic, transient tones of the sitar/guitar, enchanting vocals and is accentuated by the sublime sounds of instruments such as the Didgeradoo. Nada Brahma is a dynamic musical feast for the ears and Spirit featuring Shankhachur Lahiri, Steve Blom, Raihan Alam, Heather DeRigo, Abhik Mukherjee and Christine Ghezzo.

Catherine Costa has been a purveyor of words and music for as long as she can remember. With a little help from her dad, Peter, she learned to play the guitar and her mother, Helen, sang to her, teaching her to love the music of her time. Catherine sang jazz for about 10 years in and around Staten Island, NY with her cousin, the very talented pianist, Dan Bremer.

When she moved to Florida in 1995, she never found the same kind of musical connection like she had with Dan with any other musician, and the making of music faded from her life for several years. In that time she discovered that the rest of the World made music, and began learning the Native American flute, picked up the guitar again and, with the assistance of her husband, Barry Skeete, learned to play the djembe.

Her CD "Because I Have a Song" is her current focus, as is her vision of musicians from all over the world coming together to share their music and their dreams in festival, spiritual and celebratory settings through her group Red-tailed Music.

Charles Barry Skeete was born in Queens, N.Y. and has been a music and percussion enthusiast since childhood. Barry has performed with the Fred Johnson Jazz Group at the Clearwater, FL Jazz Festival in 2000 & 2005, and opened for headliners such as Patti LaBelle, B.B. King, Boz Skaggs, Boney James and Rick Braun. As a duo, Barry and Fred provided the background music for readings by Deepak Chopra and Coleman Barks and have co-produced countless Sound Sculpture Improvisational Performances.

Barry participated in the Art & Spirituality Festivals and Community Arts Ensemble held by the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and has provided percussion for many multi-national musical presentations. Barry completed Drum Circle Facilitator training with Arthur Hull/Village Music Circles™. Barry is the owner of, "Drum With Me" specializing in facilitating interactive drumming events at Nursing Centers, and Assisted Living Facilities, etc.
